"To Our Charming Gardeners"

SUNNYSIDE UP MOMENT - MAY 23, 2020

DAY SIXTY-EIGHT OF THE CORONAVIRUS QUARANTINE FOR US AT STACK 'EM HIGH PANCAKES AND SO FORTH

Fortunately, from the beginning of the pandemic to the end of each day I have been in the safe embrace of those who love, lighten and lift up.  This experience has been an emotional roller coaster, and I have no doubt we are still in for some loop de loops.  But through it all my spirits have been continually buoyed by the essential people in my life.  Distance, social, physical or otherwise, may strain but cannot break the ties that bind people who truly care about each other.  Marcel Proust said, “Let us be grateful for the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”  During quarantine my gardeners have done more than make me happy, they have stayed near me when my light was low and kept it burning when it otherwise may have gone out.

I am more than grateful; I am inspired to do the same.  I believe it was Aristotle who espoused, “civilizations flourish when men plant seeds for trees under which they will never sit.”  And while preparing and caring for the future is our moral duty, caring and cherishing in the present moment is what keeps the ground fertile and ensures those seeds will grow.  And to me that’s what puts love over the top and ensures its win.  When we tend to each other, we bloom and the seeds are scattered for today and tomorrow and forevermore.
